WHAT TO SEE & DO IN LA FORTUNA

HOT SPRINGS:

*Eco Thermales- As the number of visitors to these hot springs is limited, you have to reserve it at least a few hours in advance. Your hotel will do this for you. There is an honour bar system so you don´t need to get your cash wet and on a clear day you can get a fantastic PHOTO of the volcano! from the car park.

*Tabacon Hot Springs-  The most famous -and crowded- of the hot springs in La Fortuna. Cheaper to go in the evening. A free shuttle bus picks up from outside Sunset Tours on the main street or picks up from big hotels on he route. Dont pay for the buffet, its no good!(Tabacon photo)

TOURS:

In our opinion the best day trip from La Fortuna is to Cano Negro Reserve great birdwatching opportunities. On our last trip there we also saw sloths, caimans, Jesus Christ lizards, howler monkeys and more.

ACTIVITIES- ATTRACTIONS:

*La Catarata Waterfall just outside La Fortuna is a beautiful waterfall down a steep set of `stairs`so wear good shoes! About USD6 entrance. You can´t swim under the waterfall but you can swim in the stream on the left of the viewing platform as the rocks break up the flow.

La Fortuna is the town close to the base of  Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica

The town is a good base for day trips to the Cano Negro Reserve

The majority of restaurants, tour operators and budget hotels are on or just off the main street in La Fortuna.

HOTELS IN LA FORTUNA & ARENAL

Our favorite mid-range hotels in La Fortuna are San Bosco and Monte Real Hotel. Both hotels are located near the center of La Fortuna with their own swimming pool.

Nearer to the volcano the Arenal Lodge has great views of Arenal looking out over a forest. From about USD75 for a standard double to USD150 for a suite or chalet with kitchenette.

The  Montana de Fuego Inn has varnished wood cabinas and the junior suites have A/C and minifridges and some have great views from the porch to the volcano.

The best lava views are currently from Arenal Observatory Lodge or from Linda Vista del Norte in El Castillo.

RESTAURANTS & BARS IN LA FORTUNA

On the main street in La Fortuna is Don Rufino- pictured above- it's the in restaurant in La Fortuna, popular with locals and visitors.

The food is good- recommended is Grandma's recipe baked chicken-,it's also a very nice place to sit at the bar with a cocktail -mojitos and are good - and bar snacks- we recommend the Filet Mignon, a bargain at about US$5.

Other good places to eat and drink are:

Las Nenes has the best seafood in town-great ceviche- as well as good Italian and good steaks.

Lava Rocks Lounge- near the central park, great food but not cheap!

Soda el Rio, -Best fruit juices in La Fortuna, best casdos are down the road at La Mesa de Mama

Down to Earth- Fruit with granola and honey breakfast or great sandwiches all day and the owners own organic grown coffee which you can also buy by the bag!
